Big Cross Ended Antique Pitch Pine Pew from All Saints, Portsmouth (SOLD)

Circa 1900, these striking pews are like nothing we have had before.  If you like crosses, these are the pews for you.  A herringbone panel back adds to the design as does the substantial arch at the base of each end. Note the finish: This is sometimes called ‘crackling’ and it happens over many years as the original shellac coating cures into the distinctive finish that you can see on your pew. It’s a very common thing, especially on pitch pine pews which have a very high resin content which contributes to this happening. This is characterful and proof that the furniture is well over a hundred years old (it takes that long at least to happen).
