Exceptional 1880’s French Brass and Gilt Bronze Vases ‘Portapalme’ with Opaline Flowers

£1,500.00

France, Brittany, 1880s.

Their square brass bases decorated with gilt leaves are topped with a solid brass vase whose handles are adorned with gilded bronze dragons. On one side, the vases have the letters X (Chi) and P (Rhô) superimposed on each other, and to the left and right of these are the letters for Alpha and Omega. The opposite side of the vases have clover leaves.

Two gilded branches, each with six opaline flowers and several ornate gilded leaves complete the piece, which in liturgical terms is known as a ‘portapalme’ and would be placed on the gradine behind the altar, between the candlesticks.

These magnificent pieces come from a private chapel of a castle in Dinan, Brittany. The initials V-M engraved on the base of each candlestick indicate the alliance of two noble houses, possibly Vitre-Malestroit.
