An exciting old store room find, this 7-foot 217cm tall cross is relatively modern but we believe the corpus probably Flemish, under its many layers of paint, to be at least two hundred and fifty years old. It is not impossible that it might date from the late 17th Century. Unlike most modern representations, this Christ is tranquil, unadorned with thorns with long hair and a half beard. Even with the distressed, layered paint finish the impression is of great beauty the nails are particularly brutal and spiked.
